I would recommend a permanent erasing of all drives including the operating system since the windows operating system is said to store some hidden files with information on your usage /browsing etc

you could copy the keys from the software installed in your computer and ask the company to give you back up disks

unless otherwise configured a Web Server will look for default file names to load on initial page load.

What that means is the server is looking for a page named "index.php, index.htm, index.html, index.asp, index,aspx, index.jsp, default.php, default.htm, default.html, default.asp, default.aspx, default.jsp or something similar.

The index.* or default.* page is your initial homepage. make sure in your web files your homepage is named correctly.

If you’re planning on just giving away your license for these programs then that’s fine, however you will not legally be allowed to install and continue to use these programs on your new computer. Now if you don’t have any disks and the company that sold you the computer just pre-loaded all the software, especially Windows and Office (Word, Excel, etc) Then they broke the law and so did you by accepting this and by using these programs. Play it safe and kill the system. Do a low level format, also referred to as Zero Filling (not a regular format) on the hard drive and then let the recipient of the computer deal with his / her own operating system and applications. That person may not even want to use Windows but may prefer Linux.

Barkley …: Your method is flawed and data deleted in that fashion can easily be recovered. When you simply press delete on files they actually don’t get deleted; the space looks like it’s deleted and empty – but it is merely "ready to be overwritten", hence the countless data recovery utilities out on the market. Even if you format your hard drive or remove the partition, the data can be recovered. You have to do a low level format.

If it has been a new set up and at least 48 hours hasn’t gone by, your site hasn’t been picked up by the servers. You need to make sure your nameservers have been set to point to your new domain name.

There is no foolproof way without buying additional software to do it. I would just go through "My Documents" and delete all of the files there. Make sure you go through the browser option and clear all the caches, files, passwords, etc. Go to your email program and delete all accounts. If you have any other programs that access the internet be sure to clear them. Go to start/run and enter "control userpasswords2" and make sure the .net passwords are deleted. I myself would never take a chance and would delete everything and let the new owner go out and buy Vista.

best thing I reccomend is using norton erase. part of Norton system works suite. You can never really get rid of files without doing a goverment wipe on freespace and stuff you are currently deleting. Also there is more to do than this. You should go into win registry (type regedit in the start/run field.) find user info and remove you name and any other sensitive data.
