Should women keep in mind the lessons of Thalidomide when listening to ads about GARDASIL®?
Friday, December 4th, 2009It was developed by the German pharmaceutical company Grunenthal and hit the market in October 1957. Two years later, it was approved for use in Canada. The United States held off — the Food and Drug Administration demanded more data on the drug’s safety before it would agree to approve it.
As the FDA waited for the results of studies into thalidomide, reports began surfacing in Europe of unusual side effects experienced by people taking the drug. Among them was peripheral neuropathy, or damage to the nervous system that serves limbs and organs. This can lead to pain, numbness and gait imbalance.
There were also more disturbing side effects reported. Women were giving birth to babies with severe defects like abnormally short limbs, flipper-like arms and toes growing out of the hips.
It’s estimated that as many as 12,000 babies were born with deformities linked to thalidomide. By August 1962, at least 42 were born in Canada. A task force established by the federal government later pegged the number of Canadian children born with thalidomide-induced deformities at 115.
The German government ordered thalidomide off the market by the end of November 1961, against the wishes of Grunenthal. But the drug remained available in Canada until March 1962.

—————————–
As I listen and see the ads aimed at young women I can not help but think that some one should remember the lessons of Thalidomide when the drug companies also told young women it too was a wonder drug and ever so safe
—————– How many people over the years have drug companies killed maimed or deformed ?
When you see an ad by a drug company should you also keep in mind that these are the people who brought you this
http://www.chm.bris.ac.uk/motm/thalidomide/thalid2.jpg
——- Consider the fluoride in the water which has been proven a poison which lowers IQ’s and has a warning on the toothpaste as a result or the aspartame in your drinks which is known to cause anything from mild nausea to death
Not only do they kill people and deform them and dumb them down they also refuse to admit any legal liability unless they are forced to — Drug companies represent billion and trillion dollar structures — Could you force them to do anything ? Who could should another accident happen ?

I know that is why I posted the question — That drug was available in Canada over the counter to combat morning sickness and it could have been any one of us that was impacted by this "safe drug".
Would you have bought something to combat morning sickness while pregnant ? Or course you might have it could have been any of us ( in Canada) born at that time and the women of that generation never forgot that
———– But their children and grand children have no idea what I am talking about because this failure of the drug companies and the safety nets has been buried with hopes it will be forgotten
I think it is an important lesson for young women to keep in mind — The drugs company wants your money they don’t care about you or your child no matter how slick the ad it
thank you for posting this. people should extend the say no to drugs campaign to pharmaceutical drugs too.
how would I create simple scripts or programs to save time on my computer?
Tuesday, December 1st, 2009For example here are some programs I would like to create.
Something that can install all the programs I want on my computer when I do a clean re-install of windows. For example, instead of having to spend an entire day installing and clicking and installing ect. is there a script or answer file I could create? What language?
Also something that can convert a group of files into another file type (ex: word to pdf, or chm to pdf, avi to mpeg, ect.) Instead of having to convert each individual file at a time manually using a program that could take an hour or more.
I’m an intermediate in C++ and getting there with Java and C# also, just started learning PHP, html, Javascript ect this year and I eventually plan to pick up perl and python once I master these other ones. That should give me plenty of options to program or script what I want. Anyone know where to start or have advice? 10 points to anyone who can help or just answer.
the first scenario, the OS would have already been installed and I’d just run an exe or script to install all the programs I want which I have the exe’s to in a folder.
I heard the best way to pick up languages is to program stuff on your own, those are some things I’d like to try, where should I start? Any source code examples anywhere to study?
You can use a batch script.
Most executable have an quite or silent install mode. /q might work.
What’s the name of this webcode?
Sunday, November 29th, 2009This website has a screen that flutters up like a piece of floating paper when you click the "bio" button. I am making a webpage and would like the code for this.

First of all, that’s an incredibly obnoxious website/template, in that it resizes my browser – that’s one of the things I hate most for any site to do!!!
If you right click on the site, you’ll see that it’s done in Flash. If you want to create that on your own, break out the checkbook.
Science demo help..?
Friday, November 27th, 2009which of these demos should i do? please get in before Friday. Thanks!
first three: dancing raisins, blow up balloon with lemon, and balloon blown up inside bottle. These three are found at http://www.elmhurst.edu/~chm/demos/
and the last one: http://scifun.chem.wisc.edu/HOMEEXPTS/rubberband.html
this is for 8th grade. and it has to relate to life science some way.. and demonstrate a scientific principle.
I like the blow up ballon with lemon. My second choice would be the dancing raisins.
