The problem with Windows is that when you have the option checked (in "Folder Options") to "Hide extensions of known file types" you won’t be able to tell.

Note: It’s preferrable to write code in the most basic text editor you have (like Notepad). Other word processors will put in undesirable hidden characters (for formatting and whatnot) that may interfere with the code.
– if you want to change that, instead of completely starting over you can open the page in a web browser, right-click and "View source" — then copy and paste into Notepad.

There is nothing special about burning html files. Your cd burning software should have a data burning option that would allow you to select the entire contents of the directory containing all your html files and any other files needed for your simple website, including linked images or other files linked to by your html files. This mode usually resembles windows explorer. You most likely can drag and drop too, but make sure the directory layout you are burning matches your working simple website directory layout.

If you are used to making web pages, then you know that you most likely want to include an index.html as the default starting page.

I realize that might not be the most helpful answer, but it might aid ya.

Simply put, I am making a sort of template page for a multi-page site that includes a banner, menu, main content area, and footer. These are all being positioned using an external CSS file. What I want to do is have each of those 4 elements on a master html file so that if I decide to make any changes in the future it will be relatively easy. I have been using the <object> tag to pull the external files into the main page, but the problem is when I start using {position} statements for telling the <objects> where to go.

Without using {position} everything loads up beautifully, but not where I want them to go. When I use {position} the objects themselves go where I want, but the content that’s in them is scrolled off to the side and the bottom with ugly horizontal and vertical scroll bars. I have used {overflow: hidden} but that doesn’t do anything. I’ve also set the dimensions of the object to be much larger than I want them to be, but the scroll bars are still there.

Since I haven’t got too deep into development, replacing the <object> tags with something else will not be a problem for me. My only real understanding when it comes to web coding are CSS/HTML, but if there’s a simple javascript or php snippet I can throw in that will work I’d be a happy camper.

The common solution to this problem is to place all of your source for your header into one file, and your footer into another. Then you use a server-side include (whether in shtml, php, or some other server-side language) and "include" that single header and footer file into all of your other pages.

Then when you want to edit your layout, you just change the header/footer files and all of the other pages will load these changes on the server’s end before it is sent to the browser.

To include a file in PHP, just do this:

<?php include("directory/filename.php"); ?>

Note that all of your pages will have to have a .php extension (or you’ll need to modify your .htaccess) in order for this to work.

If you already have all of your pages in .html and don’t want to change them to .php, you can also use SSI. For more information on this, check out this tutorial:

I assume the best way to do this is via importing, similar to a css file, but how do I do this? I can’t use a css file because the code I want to import involves displayed text.

just make sure you can run php and split the document into template files.

For example create a file called header.php and inside that file insert:

Then create a file called footer.php and inside that have:

Lastly, create your page, i’ll call mine index.php – inside I’ll have :

So now, when you run the page on a server with php, it will include your header and footer files for you. all you have to do, is edit one of these files to update all the pages in your site with the includes.

Make sure you create a file called style.css and input the code below to get an idea:

To post an image on the webpage, use the following code:

<img src = "Image" alt = "AlternateText" />

Replace "Image" with the name of the file name PLUS the file extension type. So if you have a file called "cat.jpg", you would put:
<img str = "cat.jpg" alt = "Cat" />

The alt text is what displays if for some reason the image doesn’t work.

The file names are case sensitive too. I designed a site that has a lot of images, and the whole case sensitivity thing was kind of tedious…it’s very picky…

Here are your proper instructions…..

Go into My Computer, go up to the Tools menu and then down to Folder Options. Click on the ‘File Types’ tab. Give it a few seconds to load.

Scroll down to the extension you wish to change and then click on it and hit Edit and browse to the program you wish to open those file extensions. Pretty easily done.

From here, you can also change the icon for that type of file, also.

OR, you can…

Hold down Shift and then right-click on the file. Go to Open With, Select Program. Select the program you wish to open the file type with (you may have to browse for it), AND place a check at the bottom to ALWAYS use this program, and then hit OK.

Either way will work.

Another way to do it is if you have MS Word. Open each HTML file in Word, then merge all the Word documents into a single one, and finally save the composite Word document as a web page.
