Who benefits most of most of the self help books, the author or the reader?

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

BOTH I would say. At some stage the Author in their life (if not born with this gift which I doubt), has had to come to terms with altering their own lives in a great way. If not then they were probably born with a deep understanding of compassion, and then went onto to study this subject in a very detailed way to be able to write the book.

The only ones who do not benefit are those readers that do not help themselves. You can take a horse to the water but you can’t make him drink. But generally I would say that equally both the author and the reader benefit from such knowledge.

Can someone help me look over my writing?

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

I had an assignment to write pretend letter to an author and I was wondering what kind of things would help this peice…

here it goes:

I have read your book The Giver twice in the past couple of years; it is such an original book, it poses more questions than it answers. I still haven’t fully grasped how someone could pull such a far fetched version of real life out of thin air, how did you come up with the story? Did you get ideas from the world today by exaggerating real life concepts? Something that really makes this book good is the way you can connect to the characters, how did you come up with them? I especial like Asher, out of all of the characters in the book it seems like he is most like a “normal” person in present time, did you base his or any other characters personalities off of anyone you know?

continued here
The story takes place in a very controlled environment, does that have a deeper mean then portrayed, hypothetically do you think this sort of thing will ever happen in the far future to some extent? Well, I think you’re a great author and I have read some of your other books, who inspires you to write them? If no one in particular inspires you what authors do you look up to in past and present time? Did you always know you were going to be a writer, wear your parents and teacher supportive?
does it seem too wordy I’m only thirteen and I may need to dumb it down a bit so it doesnt sound fake…which it isnt
and the reason there is so may question is that we had to have 10 questions

Your only real problem is that your questions are not well integrated. I did rewrite it entirely. (but I had to. I’m sorry, I cannot let a paper with such potential go unedited.) Here, whether you accept my corrections or not:

I have read your book “The Giver” twice in the past couple of years, and have enjoyed it more than you could know. It is such an original book. Posing more questions than it answers, the narrative has transfixed me through the far-fetched version of reality that it offers. I cannot imagine constructing something so complex fully from my imagination. How did you come up with the story? Is it simply an exaggeration of current societal concepts? Something that really makes this book good is the way one can connect to the characters. How did you come up with them? Out of all of the characters in the book, Asher stands out in my mind. It seems he is most like a “normal” person in present time; did you base his or any other characters’ personalities off of anyone you know?
The story takes place in a very controlled environment. What do you hope the reader interprets this to mean? And, do you believe this to be, to some extent, a possible portrayal of our future? This very idea is haunting, and I find myself questioning such possibilities. That is why I am so impressed by your writing; it causes the reader to think, to imagine. From whom do you draw inspiration when you write? Do friends, family members, or fellow authors act as muses to you? Every book of yours that I have come across has impressed me. If there are authors who you admire, could you suggest them to me for further reading? Your literary interests, particularly those you had as a teen, would give me more insight into your writing. When you matured, did you know that writing would be your career? If so, did you find support in your parents/teachers? I only hope that you continue to pen novels as brilliant as “The Giver”.

HELP! I need to do a research paper on a poet of my choice, but i do not know many poets.?

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

suggestions? I am in an AP Literature class (college level class being taken in High School) so i am not allowed to do Dr. Seuss, here. Its going to be a long tedious project so i want to pick someone who has poems that aren’t too difficult to interpret (and explain connections to theme by explianing the author’s literary techniques), and are preferably funny. I like sarcasm. Please help me make a good choice!

If it can be someone still living, I highly advocate for Billy Collins. He was a US Poet Laureate so you’ll have no trouble finding lots of biographical info on him and critical info on his work.

Furthermore, his poems are characterized by their straightforward, conversational style, and should be easy for AP lit student to pick apart. For irony and sarcasm, start with this one, "Introduction to Poetry":

For something more poignant, but still tongue-in-cheek humor, try "Forgetfulness":

And to really drive it home, read "The Names," which Collins wrote to commemorate the first anniversary of September 11:

Help me remember the title and author of this book?

Friday, February 26th, 2010

I read this a while ago and can’t remember author or title. It is about a serial killer and the killer is real wacked. I vaguely remember he shaves his body and rubs cat urine on himself. Seems like he hides in the attic or something…so frustrating!!
It was not deranged. But it was definitely fiction.

Was it a non fiction? Like a biography of some sort? There’s a book titled "Deranged" and it chronicles the life of Albert Fish, the notorious serial cannibal who used to do demented stuff, like rub cat urine, self inflict pain on himself and was compared to a real life "Hannibal Lecter." Maybe that was it?

Research help on the book Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen?

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

I have to do a book by a British author for my senior research paper and I chose Northanger Abbey. However, I’m having issues finding FREE resources to help me along the way. For my sources, I have to use 2 book, 2 magazine or journal articles, and 1 newspaper.
I live in a very small town and I would be surprised if our library has a thousand books. It would be absolutely no help.

Most libraries have databases with these resources. Mine for example gives me access to millions of magazine articles, thousands of newspapers, and allows me to bring in any book in North America. This is the city public library, and the university library has even more resources.

I need help finding an agent for publishing my second novel – how do I find a legitimate agent?

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Okay, so a few things.
I have already published a book, so I’m aware of the publication process and I’m aware you don’t NEED an agent to publish a book. I also know that it will be difficult to find a willing author in this economy.
Please, unless you actually KNOW don’t answer this. I know that I could easily type "agents" into an internet search box and find a slew of them, but I’m more concerned with knowing sources to find LEGITIMATE agents – not just any type.

Identify agents who have sold novels like yours by going to bookstores and writing down titles, authors, and publishers of the books in your genre. All of them.

Get online and try to determine which agent brokered the deal for each book. You can find other agents seeking work in your genre through “Writer’s Market” and “Literary Marketplace” (US) or “Writers’ & Artists’ Yearbook” (UK). Check the publisher listings, too, which will include “agented submissions only” or not. (Maybe you don’t even need an agent.)

Research each agent as extensively as you can. Find websites with career history, sales, personal bio, blogs and/or twitter, AAR membership, etc. Determine whether they prefer email or regular mail for queries. Check the client list and make sure you have at least a passing familiarity with the authors who write in your genre.

Your research should include a visit to Preditors and Editors and one to the Bewares and Background Checks board at AbsoluteWrite. Figure out who’s a good fit for you. Don’t be afraid to aim high. The worst that can happen is they say no–and most will.

Write a one-page query letter, tailoring it to individual agents based on the information you got from research, and send it to the few agents you’d most like to represent you, via the means they prefer (email, paper) and with the attachments or enclosures requested. If the query letter is really good and you’ve done your homework well, at least some will ask for a partial or full manuscript. If none does, rewrite the query before sending out the next batch.

Reputable agents charge the author nothing, so any agent who asks for a payment, for any reason whatsoever, is not legitimate.

I need help choosing an author.?

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

I need help choosing an author?
I need to choose an american author who made an impact on literature. They can de deceased or alive. I have a few in mind- Edgar Allan Poe, Stephen King, James Fenimore Cooper……if you have any other suggestions or have one from my three, could you please give me some ideas. And a brief statement on why they made an impact. Thank you.

Try JD Salinger. He made an impact by writing the first literature for both teens and adults.

Out of your three, I’d pick King. He popularized an entire genre.

What Tittle Suits The Story The Most?Authors?Help?!?

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Okay ,well this girl, she is on a way to become famous.she is 17 and on her way to dancing classes she misses the streetlights and nearly got ran over by a car.luckily this 18 year old boy saved her.the girl tried to become friends with him but he rejected every time she asked if he wanted to go out sometime.then one day she runs away from home because her and her parents didn’t have a good time(if you catch my drift).she bumps into that guy and tells him about it and keeps saying she wished her life was totally different.so he offers her that she has four chances and three lives to choose from.
1)Lone but rich life
2)Poor but full of love life
3)no home,normal money and a friend
4)go back on to the normal life.
she tried each one but stopped at four.then she went back to the Original life but her parents didn’t remember her totally.she has to pass a one question quiz.it is:"if you had to choose between fame and a person you love, what would you choose?"if she had chosen fame,it would mean her heart is black and she isn’t aloud to pass to the normal life.if she choose person you love, her heart is clear.

Im stuck with a good tittle for this….anyone help please?

thanks for your help!
